CBSE Class 12 Computer Science: A Practical Preparation Guide

By Subhanu Sankar Roy · · 2 min read

If your child is in CBSE Class 12 and taking Computer Science (subject code 083), the board exam rewards two things above all: writing correct Python by hand, and explaining concepts in the words the marking scheme expects. This guide covers what the syllabus contains, where students usually lose marks, and how to plan the year.

What the Class 12 syllabus covers

The syllabus has three units. Always check the current year's curriculum on the CBSE Academic website, because weightings shift slightly between years.

  • Computational Thinking and Programming: a Python revision tour, functions, exception handling, text, binary and CSV file handling, and the stack data structure.
  • Computer Networks: network types and topologies, devices, protocols and basic web concepts.
  • Database Management: relational database concepts, SQL queries, and connecting Python to MySQL.

The theory paper is worth 70 marks and the practical component 30. The practical includes a lab test, the practical file, a project and a viva.

Where students lose marks

  • File handling: students understand the idea but mix up file modes ('r', 'w', 'a', 'rb', 'wb') and forget the details of the pickle and csv modules.
  • Output and error questions: predicting what a piece of code prints takes practice with careful dry runs, not just reading code.
  • SQL: confusing WHERE with HAVING, and GROUP BY with ORDER BY.
  • Python–MySQL connectivity: the pattern (connect, cursor, execute, commit, fetch) has to be written from memory.
  • Networks: short answers that are correct but miss the keywords the marking scheme looks for.

A plan for the year

  • April to July: Python and functions, until writing code by hand feels comfortable. Start the practical file as you go, not in January.
  • August to October: file handling, stacks and SQL. Choose the project topic early.
  • November to December: networks, then full sample papers and past papers under timed conditions.
  • January to February: practical exam and viva preparation, and marking your own papers against the official marking schemes.

How to practise output questions

Take a short program, draw a table with one column per variable, and update it line by line as you trace the code. Do this on paper, then run the code to check. Ten minutes a day of tracing does more for the output-based questions than hours of rereading notes.

Does your child need a tutor?

Many students manage with school teaching and the textbook. A tutor helps most when Class 11 foundations are shaky, because Class 12 builds directly on Class 11 Python, or when a student abroad has limited CS teaching at school. If that sounds familiar, a short assessment shows quickly where the gaps are.
